Prayer Challenge Sept. 24 – Idols

Day 24 – Idols

Prayer Time Goal: 24 Minutes

(Today, I share a repost of this topic from the 2018 prayer challenge)

Idolatry. What a sneaky character!

Thousands of years ago, the face of idolatry was pretty distinct. It typically consisted of the worship and adoration of gods in the form of precious metals, statues, and even parts of nature (the sun, ocean, etc.). Today, it can be much more difficult to identify idols since we may not necessarily bow down to or worship any of the aforementioned.

What can be dangerous about idolatry’s “make-over” is that it can be difficult to detect in our personal lives. What does “modern day” idolatry look like? The glorification and preoccupation with self (our looks, talents, goals, etc.), celebrities, money, social media, relationships, the pursuit of success and happiness, entertainment, religion, fear, bitterness, lifestyle, the world, work, our social affiliations, addictions, etc.

Worship is defined as treating someone or something with the adoration, devotion, or reverence appropriate to a deity. Chart your daily behaviors and thoughts for a few weeks. Note everything that you do and think about and record how long you do it for. What idols might you find there? Where does most of your time, energy, and desires go. Who or what may be reigning in your heart? Another exercise would be to make a list of the most important things in your life, things you feel you absolutely couldn’t live without. Where might God rank on that list?

We aren’t told to not like or love anything or anyone else. We are told the degree to which we should monitor and control our affinity and thoughts toward these things. We’re reminded of the purpose for which we were created (God’s glory) and that He should be the only one that is worshipped in anyway.

1 John 2:15 – Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Colossians 3:1-3 – Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Exodus 20:3-5 – Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Exodus 20:5 – You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God.
