Day 27 – Spirit of the Age
Prayer Time Goal: 27 Minutes
Every age that has existed on the earth has brought with it a set of beliefs, practices, values, and systems that have influenced the culture of that time. Most people conform to these systems as they often tickle and liberate the senses and conscience. Others feel pressure to comply or bullied to blend in.
The spirit of the age drives like a strong current, sprinkled with moral collapse in an anything goes, lawless society. It mostly always seeks to undermine and oppose God’s holy order and reason. The seed that produces this fruit is the spirit of the Antichrist.
As this spirit pushes the boundaries a little further, the next generation picks up the reins at a lower plain than the preceding one, shifting society closer to the edge of doing away with all moral restraint.
The direction of culture becomes dictated by self. Everyone is right in their own eyes, refusing to deny themselves of anything. Not only does the spirit of the age pollute the world, but it also pollutes the church.
One such example is the hyper-grace doctrine. This emphasizes God being a God of total grace. The danger is that people believe they’ll be pardoned for all sins, past, present, future, and may go on living life as they please without repentance. God is undoubtedly a forgiving God. However, He will not be mocked. Obedience and separating from wickedness isn’t optional.
Another such example is a lukewarm culture. The dangers here are similar to the grace theory. People live about 50% of God’s truth. Barely scratching the surface, and marinating in compromise, they go on with one foot in the church and the other foot in the world.
The standard is holiness. Not just believing and accepting Jesus into our heart as Lord. The daily choices we make will reflect our stance. One day, all people will be forced to make a clear choice, to bow down to the spirit of the age, or to stand against it. Whom will you serve?
Joshua 24:15 – And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
Matthew 24:12 – And because of the abounding of the lawlessness, the love of the many shall become cold.
Ephesians 2:2 – You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.
Revelation 3:19 – Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.
Ephesians 6:12 – For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
2 Timothy 3:13 – But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.
Isaiah 5:20 – What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.
